  • Timing of peat initiation across the central Congo Basin

Open Access•Greta C Dargie, Pauline Gulliver et al.•ARTICLE•Environmental Research Letters•2025

The central Congo Basin contains the world’s most extensive tropical peatland complex, spanning 16.7 million hectares. Until now, radiocarbon dating of basal peats has been limited to 14 samples with poor spatial coverage, and suggested that peat typically initiated during the Holocene. We present 38 new basal dates, improving spatial coverage across the region. Some of the new basal dates are much older than any previous dates, indicating that p…

  • Tropical peatlands in the anthropocene

    Open Access•Lydia E S Cole, C M Åkesson et al.•ARTICLE•Anthropocene•2022•Citada por: 2•Referencias: 152

The status of tropical peatlands, one of Earth's most efficient natural carbon stores, is of increasing international concern as they experience rising threat from deforestation and drainage. Peatlands form over thousands of years, where waterlogged conditions result in accumulation of organic matter. Vast areas of Southeast Asian peatlands have been impacted by land use change and fires, whilst lowland tropical peatlands of Central Africa and So…

  • Tropical peatlands in the Anthropocene

    Open Access•Nicholas T Girkin, Hannah V Cooper et al.•ARTICLE•Anthropocene•2022•Referencias: 134

Tropical peatlands are a globally important carbon store. They host significant biodiversity and provide a range of other important ecosystem services, including food and medicines for local communities. Tropical peatlands are increasingly modified by humans in the rapid and transformative way typical of the “Anthropocene,” with the most significant human-driven changes to date occurring in Southeast Asia. This review synthesizes the dominant cha…

  • Excavating a Mid-Iron Age crouched inhumation on the shores of Loch Gruinart, Islay, Argyll and Bute

Open Access•Dan Hawthorne, Donna Hawthorne et al.•ARTICLE•Scottish Archaeological Journal•2019

Human remains uncovered across Atlantic Scotland have displayed a variety of burial rites practised throughout the Iron Age. An excavation on the island of Islay, as part of the Historic Environment Scotland Human Remains Call-Off Contract, has uncovered a crouched inhumation eroding out of sand dunes near the western shore of Loch Gruinart. Osteological analysis of the skeleton revealed it is that of an adult male, aged between 26 and 35 years. …
