  • The recall and recognition of sonic logos.

Sebastian Silas, Megan Robinson et al.•ARTICLE•Psychology of Aesthetics…•2026

  • An unsupervised feature selection approach for finding diverse emotional-semantic representations in sonic branding music

Open Access•Sebastian Silas, David Baker et al.•ARTICLE•Journal of New Music Research•2025

Discovering the emotional–semantic dimensions underlying music description is central to music psychology and widely applied in sonic branding practice. Academic work typically relies on dimension reduction approaches such as principal components analysis (PCA), which (i) require subjective reinterpretation of latent components, (ii) often yield uneven component importances when a fixed number of dimensions is imposed, and (iii) offer limited gui…

  • Musical Manipulation of Visual Scenes In Video, Film, and TV Advertisements

Sebastian Silas, David John Baker et al.•ARTICLE•Journal of Advertising Research•2024

Advertisements frequently pair music with visual imagery to convey information about brand identity. In the context of sonic branding, the authors believe the current study offers the first rigorous tests of the potential of music and audio to manipulate the perception of simultaneously presented visuals and the psychological processes enabling this potential. Their work shows how audio-visual combinations can be explored systematically across bo…

  • Learning and Recalling Melodies

Sebastian Silas, Daniel Müllensiefen•ARTICLE•Music Perception An Interdisciplina…•2023

Using melodic recall paradigm data, we describe an algorithmic approach to assessing melodic learning across multiple attempts. In a first simulation experiment, we reason for using similarity measures to assess melodic recall performance over previously utilized accuracy-based measures. In Experiment 2, with up to six attempts per melody, 31 participants sang back 28 melodies (length 15–48 notes) presented either as a piano sound or a vocal audi…

  • The Associations Between Music Training, Musical Working Memory, and Visuospatial Working Memory

Sebastian Silas, Daniel Müllensiefen et al.•ARTICLE•Music Perception An Interdisciplina…•2022

Prior research studying the relationship between music training (MT) and more general cognitive faculties, such as visuospatial working memory (VSWM), often fails to include tests of musical memory. This may result in causal pathways between MT and other such variables being misrepresented, potentially explaining certain ambiguous findings in the literature concerning the relationship between MT and executive functions. Here we address this probl…

  • An efficient and adaptive test of auditory mental imagery

    Open Access•Rebecca W Gelding, Peter M C Harrison et al.•ARTICLE•Psychological Research•2021

The ability to silently hear music in the mind has been argued to be fundamental to musicality. Objective measurements of this subjective imagery experience are needed if this link between imagery ability and musicality is to be investigated. However, previous tests of musical imagery either rely on self-report, rely on melodic memory, or do not cater in range of abilities. The Pitch Imagery Arrow Task (PIAT) was designed to address these shortco…
