  • A History of Kissing in Ancient Israel

    Rachelle Gilmour•ARTICLE•Journal of Biblical Literature•2025

In this article I investigate when sexual mouth-to-mouth kissing was introduced and rose in prevalence in ancient Israel. Anthropological research shows that the practice of kissing is not universal across cultures, and it is thought to be transmitted to social groups through cultural contact. The presence of kissing in a culture often correlates with social stratification and political centralization. In conversation with these broader findings,…

  • Introducing a Hermeneutics of Cispicion

    Jo Henderson-Merrygold, Laura Quick et al.•EDITOR•BOOK•Introducing a Hermeneutics of…•2024

A hermeneutics of cispicion challenges cisnormative presuppositions that shape and, at times, occlude the variations in gender and sex exhibited by key characters in the ancestral narrative of Genesis 12–50. It charts the progression from Paul Ricoeur's hermeneutics of suspicion, through liberation, feminist and queer approaches. Focusing on Deryn Guest's queer and trans hermeneutics, Henderson-Merrygold then offers a new strategy for reading aga…

  • Sex Scandal and the Politics of David's Throne

    Rachelle Gilmour•ARTICLE•Journal of Biblical Literature•2022

This essay examines the literary and compositional inclusion of the story of David and Bathsheba in 2 Sam 11–12, in the stretch of narrative concerning David's court in 2 Samuel, particularly in light of current debates surrounding the so-called Succession Narrative. I argue that the sex-and-murder scandal of 2 Sam 11–12 functions within a Judahite ideology of kingship to legitimize and strengthen the power of the Davidic dynasty and was inserted…

  • From Anxiety to Reverence

    Rachelle Gilmour•ARTICLE•Die Welt des Orients•2021

This article examines the portrayal of fear of Yahweh’s violence in selected texts in the book of Samuel: 1 Sam 12; and 1 Sam 6:19–7:1 and 2 Sam 6; the former mitigating fear and the latter texts acknowledging it. Drawing on Gruber’s distinction between fear, reverence and anxiety, it will be demonstrated that whist retribution prompts fear and reverence, it removes anxiety. Parallels with other ancient near eastern texts show that a belief in Go…
