The effect of employment status on breastfeeding in the United States
Practicing Physical Anthropology in the Pediatric Nutrition Industry
The idea of physical anthropologists working in private industry may be new to many academicians who have either been trained or hold positions in traditional anthropology departments. Historically, new anthropology Ph.D.s have been encouraged by their mentors to compete for the few available teaching/research positions at colleges and universities. A job in the ivory tower is perceived by academicians to be the ideal or only desirable career pat…
Effect of DHA-containing formula on growth of preterm infants to 59 weeks postmenstrual age
Between May 1993, and September 1994, a randomized, blinded clinical trial was conducted to evaluate measures of growth and body composition in 63 (32 males; 31 females) healthy, low-birth-weight infants (940-2250 g) who were randomly assigned to an infant formula with docosahexaenoic acid (22:6n3, DHA, 0.2 wt%) from fish oil or to a control formula. A preterm formula with or without DHA was fed beginning at 7-10 days prior to hospital discharge …

Iron‐deficiency anemia in infant development
Iron plays an important role in many metabolic processes, including oxygen transport, oxidative metabolism, and cellular growth. During infancy, inadequate supply of iron resulting in iron-deficiency anemia is associated with morbidity, impaired growth, and decreased behavior and psychomotor development. Although iron requirements during infancy have become better defined, iron-deficiency anemia persists as one of the most common health problems …

Dietary patterns of older adults in the United States, NHANES II 1976–1980
The second National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey (NHANES II) 1976–1980 provided detailed information concerning the dietary patterns of older Americans. By using 24‐hour dietary recall and food frequency questionnaires, the dietary patterns of 2,615 adults aged 65–74 years were evaluated by types of living arrangements (living alone, with a spouse, or with someone other than a spouse) and income level (below poverty, at or above povert…

The Role of Bioanthropology in the Infant Formula Industry
Bioanthropological methods and quantitative skills provided the tools needed to design and implement a large‐scale national survey of infant food consumption and dietary status. This article considers dietary iron intake of 847 American infants ranging in age from 6.5 months to 13.4 months. Iron intake was evaluated according to demographic characteristics and for different foods (cow's milk, iron‐fortified formula, non‐ironfortified formula, inf…
Physical growth of infants 7 to 13 months of age
This study considers measurements of weight, recumbent length, head circumference, triceps skinfold, and arm circumference of 1,100 infants aged 7 to 13 months from a cross‐sectional sample representative of the U.S. infant population. Based on these data, smoothed percentiles of weight, recumbent length, head circumference, triceps skinfold, and arm circumference by sex and age (in months) and weight for recumbent length were calculated. Compare…
Feeding low‐fat milk during infancy
Despite the widespread agreement that low‐fat milk should not be used during infancy, there is a sizable portion of infants in the United States who were fed a diet that included low‐fat milk (⩾2% fat). In 1985, 14% of infants 8 months old, 20% of infants 10 months old, and 32% of infants 12 months old were fed low‐fat milk. The reasons given most often by mothers for low‐fat milk use was their consideration that low‐fat milk has less fat than wh…
Iron intake in the united states during the first year of life according to demographic characteristics
Iron intakes of 401 infants ranging in age from one week to twelve months from the Nationwide Food Consumption Survey 1977–78 were evaluated according to several demographic characteristics and to different foods (milk and milk products, infant formula, infant cereal, commercial infant foods, and table foods). Results indicated that iron intake was influenced strongly by the type of milk feeding in the infant's diet. Across all demographic charac…
The effect of the WIC program on nutrient intakes of infants, 1984
Introduction
A multitude of social cultural psychological economic and biological circumstances influence the ways in which mothers and other caretakers feed youngsters during their 1st year of life. The holistic and biocultural approach and perspective of anthropology have been particularly useful in infant feeding research. This group of papers demonstrates some of the directions that infant feeding research has taken in recent years. Most of the contributo…
Relationship between fatness and hemoglobin levels in the national health and nutrition examinations of the U.S.A
As shown in a total of 3114 obese individuals and 3027 lean individuals in the National Health and Nutrition Examinations of the U.S.A. (NHANES 1), obese individuals tend to systematically higher hemoglobin levels exceeding those for lean individuals by 0.20gm/dl and by 0.2 Z scores (standard deviation units) at all ages. This fatness related difference in hemoglobin level is increased when the super‐obese (S‐obs) and the super‐lean (S‐lean) are …
Fatness‐dependence and utility of the subscapular/triceps ratio
As shown in 1257 children (aged 6–10 years) and in 4065 adults (aged 20–50 years), the subscapular/triceps ratio is fatness dependent. Over a 20 mm range of the iliac skinfold (20–40 mm) the subscapular/triceps ratio increases by approximately 0.01 per mm of iliac fat in women and in children of both sexes and at a slightly lower rate in males. Over the entire range of iliac fatness (through 65 mm) fatness‐related differences in the subscapular/t…

New values defining “low” and “deficient” hemoglobin levels for white children and adults
New statistically defined values for “deficient” and “low” hemoglobin levels have been calculated from a total of 12,320 white participants in the National Health and Nutrition Examination of the United States (NHANES I). These values, corresponding to the 5th and 15th percentiles respectively, have been separately calculated both with and without low transferrin saturation levels (≤16 percent). The ability to quantify the proportion of individua…
Developmental differences in the triceps and subscapular fatfolds during adolescence in boys and girls
As shown in more than 44,000 individuals from three major nutrition surveys in the U.S.A., boys show a complex series of changes in the triceps fatfold during adolescence that is not matched by the subscapular fatfold or either of these two fatfolds in girls. There is a transient and sizeable gain in triceps fatfold thickness in boys during early adolescence, followed by a rapid decrease and then an increase or a “recovery” which necessitates add…

Replicating the income related reversal of fatness
As shown in three large‐scale surveys (the Ten State Nutrition Survey, the Tecumseh Community Health Survey and the National Health and Nutrition Examinations), the socioeconomic “reversal” of fatness in the female is a remarkably consistent phenomenon. In all three studies, low‐income girls were leaner and high income girls were fatter until adolescence. Thereafter, low income women tended to exceed high income women in both subscapular and tric…
