  • Temporality tensions in the design of simulation-based training

    Elizabeth J Carlson•ARTICLE•Journal of Applied Communication…•2024

In simulation-based training, learners apply skills in an environment that approximates the real conditions of work. Trainers who design a simulation also employ assumptions about the design of communication, or how they believe learners should communicate. More specifically, simulation-based training events draw work groups’ attention to communication expectations related to timing, timelines, and timeliness. Competing perspectives may produce t…

  • An Experimental Study of Message Strategies for Mobile Alerts and Warnings

    Elizabeth J Carlson, Joshua B Barbour•ARTICLE•Natural Hazards Review•2023

Dr. Dennis Mileti devoted his career to the study of public warnings disseminated through mass media, word of mouth, and, later, mobile technologies. To date, research on mobile public warnings has focused on standardized elements of messages (e.g., the common alerting protocol). During this same period, however, a variety of private, public, and governmental organizations have adopted mobile alert technologies to disseminate a diverse variety of…

  • Mixing Methods in Organizational Communication Research

Elizabeth Carlson, Elizabeth J Carlson et al.•ARTICLE•Annals of the International…•2016•Referencias: 64

In this review, we examine current practices in mixing methods in communication research. We examined 209 mixed-method organizational communication articles published between 1994 and 2014. Our analysis revealed four trends: (1) the dominance of single-paradigm, interpretive studies; (2) the preponderance of triangulation, complementarity, and development as purposes for mixing methods; (3) varied combinations of methods; and (4) a lack of mixed …
