In this research commentary, we describe the connections between problem posing and mathematical modeling as domains of mathematics education research. We document an unexpected apparent scarcity of problem posing in the mathematical modeling literature and provide some recommendations to better position problem posing as an integral part of research related to the teaching and learning of mathematical modeling.
