  • Socialist Biopolitics

    Open Access•Mayra Lopez•ARTICLE•Latin American Research Review•2021

Taking as a starting point the ontological differentiation between animal and human as a fundamental mechanism of biopolitical violence, I analyze the ambiguity of the imaginaries of flesh and animality in the contexts of revolutionary Cuba and Venezuela. I demonstrate how the dynamics of power marked by an ontological division between human and not human, often ascribed to neoliberalism, paradoxically operate in socialist regimes. I examine seve…

Open Access•Mayra Lopez, Magdalena López•ARTICLE•Latin American Research Review•2011

  • Access to Sterile Syringes by Injection Drug Users in Puerto Rico

    H Finlinson, H Ann Finlinson et al.•ARTICLE•Human Organization•1999

A variety of studies have concluded that a primary reason injection drug users (IDUs), their sexual partners, and children continue to be infected with HIV is the lack of access to sterile syringes. The present study employed ethnographic interviews and observations to examine access to sterile syringes by IDUs in Puerto Rico between July 1995 and June 1997, a time characterized by the absence of legal restrictions on the sale and possession of s…

  • Frequencies of HLA-A and HLA-B alleles in a Mexico City mestizo sample

Open Access•Ana Luisa Weckmann, Gilberto Vargas‐alarcón et al.•ARTICLE•American Journal of Human Biology•1997

The aim of the present study was to evaluate the frequency of HLA-A and HLA-B antigens in a sample of the Mexico City Mestizo population. Previous similar studies were done by other authors in nonrelated individuals, while the present investigation was performed in families (parents and offspring), and therefore, a more accurate estimate of gene and haplotype frequencies was obtained. The predominant antigens in descending order are A2, A24, and …
