The Sanctuary of Artemis at Sardis
Excavations in the Sanctuary of Artemis between 2002 and 2012 clarified problems of chronology and reconstruction. Evidence for occupation of this area in the Lydian period was ambiguous: pottery suggests that there was activity here, but no deposits were found. Surviving monuments from the Persian period include a calcareous tufa altar (LA 1) and a roughly square sandstone “basis.” In the Hellenistic period, a new temple was laid out with the sa…

The Sardis Campaigns of 1996, 1997, and 1998
Excavation at Sardis continued to focus on Late Roman and Archaic monuments. Of several Late Roman town houses, one that is now fully exposed has 12 groundfloor rooms with high-quality decoration (mosaic floors, wall painting, and stucco) and contained a variety of artifacts including a hoard of 21 glass weights related to coinage. The 200 m long segment of Archaic city wall, which has been under excavation for 20 seasons, evidently was built no …
The Sardis Campaigns of 1994 and 1995
Excavation at Sardis in 1994 and 1995 further exposed a Late Roman suburb, with houses and colonnaded streets of the fourth-seventh centuries A. D., and a massive defense wall of the seventh-sixth centuries B. C., together with destruction debris of the latter and associated weapons that evidently belong to the Persian attack of the 540s B. C. Foundations for a crepis wall that curbed one of the largest tumuli in the Bin Tepe cemetery were also f…
A Helmet of the Sixth Century B. C. from Sardis
A bronze-decorated iron helmet excavated at Sardis in 1987 may be dated to the mid-sixth century B. C. and may be associated with the capture and partial sack of Sardis by Cyrus the Great of Persia. The skull-piece design, unusual for helmets of Greece and the Near East before Roman times, resembles that of helmets of the second century A. D. and later, Strebenhelme and Bandhelme. The helmet presumably belonged to a soldier of either Croesus or C…
