In this article, we study how Sweden's transition to a fossil free society is interpreted and experienced by communities whose livelihoods and cultural identities are entangled with carbon-intensive industries. The study draws upon interviews with citizen groups in the coastal city of Lysekil, located next to Scandinavia's largest oil refinery. This paper draws on qualitative research conducted with cis men aged 18–35, who used dating apps to meet women both before and during COVID-19 lockdown. On December 11, 2005, residents of the Sydney beachside suburb of Cronulla took part in a demonstration to chase away "gangs" of men from inland suburbs.
