Reconnecting the dead in Iron Age Britain
Though mortuary practices seem largely archaeologically invisible in Iron Age Britain, the visible dead were subject to diverse treatment. Here, the authors report the results of a multi-strand analysis of two Iron Age skeletons buried in a stone cairn at Loch Borralie, north-west Scotland. Manipulation of one skeleton, including the possible removal of the brain, fashioning of long bones into ‘tools’ and reassembly for burial, suggests complex m…
Worlebury Hillfort, Somerset
Excavations at the Iron Age site of Worlebury hillfort during the mid-late 19th century revealed a large number of human skeletal remains, interpreted as victims of a ‘massacre’. Reanalysis of these remains, combining AMS dating, osteological, aDNA, histotaphonomy, and isotope analysis, has enabled a re-evaluation of this hypothesis. AMS dating lends support to the notion that many of these individuals may have died during a single episode, while…
The Predicament of d/Deaf
In our research with d/Deaf people in five families in the North and South Islands of New Zealand, we found that some of the challenges that we as researchers faced in our encounters with participants and within our mixed hearing and d/Deaf research group paralleled broader issues for this community. We use the details of our field research processes to explore the conundrum of d/Deafness, which may or may not be a disability, and use this explor…
Reproduction, ethics and heritable deafness
Three consenting South Island (New Zealand) families with experience of living with a heritable type of deafness undertook a series of open ended interviews to ascertain their own views on reproductive decision making and genetic testing. All the families had undergone genetic testing however their orientation to testing in general was cautiously negative. They did not regard deafness as a suitable reason for considering the termination of a preg…
Negotiating Pku
This paper explores the experience for nine New Zealanders of living with Phenylketonuria (PKU). PKU is an inherited disorder of metabolism, detected by newborn screening and treated primarily through adherence to a strict and rather unpalatable diet which current medical opinion suggests should be lifelong. Our goal is to problematise this biomedical notion of 'adherence' to such a diet, and to do so by drawing on two areas of expert knowledge w…
