Scottish Illegitimacy Ratios in the Early Modern Period
This is a regional and quantitative study of illegitimacy in Scotland 1660-1780 based on Kirk Session registers a more comprehensive and reliable source than Parish Registers. The illegitimacy ratio for Scotland as a whole did not have the upward trend after 1750 which has been found for England except in two regions the south-west and Ayrshire. The Highland Clearances
Any serious study of Highland society for the eighteenth and early nineteenth century must start with the fact that the population was growing fast. In the region as defined by F. Fraser Darling's West Highland Survey it rose from 115 thousand in 1755 to 154 thousand in 1801 and 201 thousand in 1831. These are net figures, not figures which give 'natural increase' for much of the time they record a population as held down by emigration. In one pa…

The Movements of Scottish Corn Prices in the Seventeenth and Eighteenth Centuries
VVW ith the present interest in the trends of corn prices in seventeenthand eighteenth-century England 1 it seems profitable to study those of Scotland for contrasts or parallel developments.
