  • Interwar southeastern europe confronts the west

    Keith Hitchins•ARTICLE•Angelaki•2010

This piece examines the reaction to modernism or Europeanization of an important segment of the intellectual elite in southeastern Europe in the period between the two world wars. The Romanian Emil Cioran, the Bulgarian Yanko Yanev, and the Serb Justin Popović represented broader currents of opinion in their respective countries on the crucial issues of national identity and paths of development. But each approached the challenges that Europe pos…

  • Neighboring Cultures

    Open Access•Keith Hitchins•ARTICLE•Iranian Studies•1998

The Coverage Accorded Central Asia and Afghanistan in the Encyclopaedia Iranica is remarkably broad. No significant aspect—geography, history, the economy, society, or culture—has been neglected, while the articles on the Iranian religious, economic, and cultural presence in China summarize existing scholarship and suggest new avenues of investigation. Taken together, the articles on Afghanistan provide an assessment of its unique place within th…

  • Mutual benefit societies in Hungary, 1830‐1941

    Open Access•Keith Hitchins•ARTICLE•International Social Security…•1993

In Hungary for most of the nineteenth century mutual benefit societies played a key role in providing various social groups with aid in case of illness, accident, disability or death. The majority were linked to the burgeoning working‐class movement and were voluntary associations whose members had no other recourse in times of adversity. Hungary was undergoing transformation in the nineteenth century. Changes in goods production and the craft gu…

The collapse of the Russian monarchy in February and the overthrow of the Provisional Government in October 1917 confronted Rumanian leaders with the prospect of a violent change in their own country. Rumania's participation in the First World War on the side of the Entente had by February 1917 resulted in a succession of military defeats and the occupation of two-thirds of the country, including Bucharest, by German and Austro-Hungarian forces. …

  • Samuel Clain and the Rumanian Enlightenment in Transylvania

    Open Access•Keith Hitchins•ARTICLE•Slavic Review•1964•Citada por: 1

In the second half of the eighteenth century the leavening effects of the Enlightenment began to be felt among the Rumanians of Transylvania. The Enlightenment in Transylvania-and in Eastern Europe generally -was a curious blend of natural law, rationalism, and optimism, drawn from the West, and nationalism, a response to local conditions. It is no coincidence that the first tangible signs of national awakening among the Rumanians manifested them…

The history of the Rumanian socialists of Hungary in the decade before the outbreak of the First World War and during the final crisis of the Dual Monarchy in 1918 offers a striking illustration of the importance of national feeling in socialist and working-class movements of peoples who had not yet achieved their national-political emancipation and who were still overwhelmingly agrarian. In seeking support, Rumanian socialists had to compete wit…
