  • Composition changes of water extracts from Asian lacquer surfaces during artificial aging and the influence of formulations

Open Access•Jing Han, Michael R Schilling et al.•ARTICLE•Journal of Cultural Heritage•2024

Lacquered artifacts are among the most exquisite objects in museum collections. However, during aging, a considerable quantity of water-soluble products are formed on the lacquered surfaces, posing significant conservation and preservation challenges. This paper presents in-depth research on the composition of these water-soluble products by the investigation into water extracts from Asian lacquer coatings during artificial aging. Lacquer coating…

  • Comprehensive characterization of modern industrial Argentinian paints for improved chronological painting attribution

Open Access•Florencia Castellá, Marta Pérez-Estebanez et al.•ARTICLE•Journal of Cultural Heritage•2024

Throughout the twentieth century, the paint industry developed a multitude of new binding media, pigments and additives that improved the appearance, ease of application, and performance of modern industrial paints. Depending on when and where they were first manufactured, and when they were introduced into paint formulations, some of these new paint components could conceivably be chronological markers useful in assigning attribution to specific…

  • Surface appearance and morphology changes of Asian lacquer due to artificial aging

Open Access•Jing Han, Marianne Webb et al.•ARTICLE•Journal of Cultural Heritage•2023•Referencias: 47

Asian lacquer is one of the earliest natural polymers used in human history. Objects made with decorative Asian lacquer are among the most exquisite collections in museums. This is the first systematic study on the influence of historically used additives on the appearance and morphology changes of unaged and aged lacquer coatings. Macro and microanalytical methods were optimized to investigate the surface changes of lacquer caused by artificial …

  • Reproducing reality. Recreating bonding defects observed in transparent poly(methyl methacrylate) museum objects and assessing defect formation

Open Access•Anna Laganà, M David et al.•ARTICLE•Journal of Cultural Heritage•2021

The most common method chosen by artists, designers, and craftsmen to realize artworks and objects with transparent poly(methyl methacrylate) (PMMA) is to bond pieces from premanufactured sheets using solvents or adhesives. This method is considered relatively easy to use, however achieving bonds that are both transparent and strong can be difficult. Artifacts from museum collections made by bonding transparent PMMA often exhibit a variety of bon…

  • GC/MS Characterization of Beeswax, Protein, Gum, Resin, and Oil in Romano-Egyptian Paintings

Open Access•Joy Mazurek, Marie Svoboda et al.•ARTICLE•Heritage•2019•Citada por: 2

This article presents results from a binding media survey of 61 Romano-Egyptian paintings. Most of the paintings (51) are the better-known funerary mummy portraits created using either encaustic or tempera paint medium. Samples from all the paintings (on wooden panels or linen shrouds) were analyzed with gas chromatography/mass spectrometry (GC/MS) to identify waxes, fatty acids, resins, oils, and proteins in one sample. Analytical protocols that…

  • Characterization Of Early Imperial Lacquerware From The Luozhuang Han Tomb, China

Open Access•Xiao Ma, Ye Shi et al.•ARTICLE•Archaeometry•2017•Citada por: 3•Referencias: 14

This paper focuses on the characterization of materials from fragmented pieces of an imperial lacquer plate in the Luozhuang Han tomb, which dates to the early Western Han dynasty. Various non-invasive and minimally invasive techniques were performed, including optical and electron microscopy, XRF, Raman spectromicroscopy, FT–IR, XRD and THM-Py–GC/MS. The lacquerware pieces consist of a five-layer structure, which includes (from the top): a red p…

  • Reconstructing lacquer technology through Chinese classical texts

    Open Access•Julie Chang, Michael R Schilling•ARTICLE•Studies in Conservation•2016

Lacquer has a long and ongoing tradition of use in Asia. Known as qi 漆 in China, its use can be traced back to the Neolithic period and it remains in use today. The earliest known Chinese archaeological lacquered object dates to approximately 6000 bce. Many Chinese classical texts and historical documents over the last 8000 years mention lacquer and related information. An extensive investigation of Chinese literature from different time periods …

  • Blood as a Binding Medium in a Chumash Indian Pigment Cake

    Open Access•David Scott, D A Scott et al.•ARTICLE•Archaeometry•1996•Citada por: 5•Referencias: 14

As part of a study of Chumash Indian pigments, some black pigment cakes have been examined. One pigment cake was characterized as soot by polarized light microscopy, and Fourier transform infrared microscopy showed that the binder was proteinaceous. Protein determination was followed by examination using gas chromatography‐mass spectrometry analysis which showed a characteristic suite of amino acids to be present, proportionally similar to blood.…
