In 1964, widows with shaved heads were obvious in their maroon saris. An early indication of a change in status was the one widow in a white sari. By 2011, widows were indistinguishable in appearance from other women. Not only did they remain in the society, retaining most of the status they had occupied as married women, but they also had remarriage as an option. Widows ceased to be a burden on Havik society. In 1964, ritual pollution and purity were the organizing principles of Totagadde life. Caste hierarchy defined the social order. Within the household, elder respect regulated behavior.
