The economic history of Thailand
The article, which is a first step in writing a general economic history of Thailand, highlights the marked discontinuities between stagnation and growth, mono–crop culture and diversification, which occurred around the 1950s. While many factors were involved, an underlying theme was the transition from ‘expensive’ to ‘cheap’ labour caused by population growth and the closing of the rice frontier

The Blue Funnel Legend
For more than a century Blue Funnel ships, managed from Liverpool by Alfred Holt and Company, held a unique place in Britain's shipping industry. Starting as pioneers of cargo liners between Liverpool
Eastward Ho! The Beginnings of Ocean Steam Ship
In previous chapters we have seen how the Holt enterprise expanded after 1865 as new trades were steadily introduced, and we have seen, too, how critically important was the relationship built up between Blue Funnel and the various overseas agents. Beginning as a small-scale venture trading between Liverpool and China, the service widened at both ends, and by 1918 a world-wide network had come into being, served by a large modern fleet built to e…

The British Gas Industry before 1850
T tHIS paper attempts to describe and quantify certain aspects of the spread of the gas industry in the United Kingdom during the first half of the nineteenth century. It deals in particular with three problems: (i) the extent to which the gas industry had developed by mid-century, (ii) the pace of construction of new gasworks in the period, and (iii) the amount of fixed capital investment in the gas industry. Finally, a few general remarks are m…

United States Economic Policy and the "Dollar Gap" of the 1920's
PRINCIPAL weakness of the international economy during the I 920's was the persistent imbalance in international payments. Numerous countries in central and eastern Europe, and among non-European primary producers, had serious merchandise trade deficits which were not compensated for (and were often aggravated) by current invisible transactions. The United States was by far the most important of the surplus nations, both on trade and on total cur…
Russia and the International Wheat Trade, 1861-1914
Throughout the years from the Emancipation of the serfs in 1861 until the outbreak of the First World War Russia provided a significant share of the total quantity of wheat entering into international commerce. Even after the 1870s, when new sources of wheat supply were opened to world trade, Russia rarely accounted for less than one quarter of the total, and usually provided nearer one third. The continuing importance of Russian wheat in interna…

The German Business Cycle in the 1920's
T HE starting-point of this article is an interpretation of the German business recessions of I926 and I929 recently put forward by Prof. Temin.1 Temin's principal concern was to challenge the orthodox views of, for example, Schmidt and Landes,2 who emphasized the part played in the depression by reduced flows of foreign investments into Germany. Temin concluded that lessening foreign capital did not initiate the depression; the causes were domes…

The German Business Cycle in the 1920's
I HAVE no wish to make an extended reply to Prof. Temin since he deals directly neither with my interpretation nor, save in one respect, with my criticisms of his own approach. Even this one instance is an objection to my source reference rather than to the point I make. Temin claims that I have miscited Trivedi's article (Review of Economic Studies, October I 970) in saying that this suggests a relationship between inventory investment and inter…
