Determining whether the black experience was unique, or similar to that of earlier white immigrant groups, is central to the debate over whether blacks should be the beneficiaries of special compensatory legislation in the present. This paper reports the results of an analysis of the institutional structure of 90 census tracts representative of the Philadelphia urbanized area. Ecological positions of the tracts and the social and economic characteristics of local populations are related to the number, type, and distribution of local facilities and services. An examination of the contribution of local facilities to residential stability of the census tracts indicates that th…
Fertility patterns and trends among the Old Order Amish
Using statistics from an Amish census, a survey of couples, and a family genealogy, we examine trends in Old Order Amish fertility during this century. We also examine factors which might explain variations in fertility. We find that Amish fertility has remained high and that there is no evidence of a downward trend. Comparisons with Hutterite fertility show that while marital fertility rates are similar for young women, the rates for older Amish…

In this paper, we analyze the marital role division between 1,212 couples taken from a probability sample of the Philadelphia urbanized area. We concentrate on the division of household tasks, of child care, and of paid employment. Using log linear techniques, we examine the effects of a variety of variables measuring social networks and the relative status of husband and wife. Data show support for a marital power model with husband's income neg…

Past efforts of statistical demographers to compute postcensal population estimates for local units have been hampered by the fact that they have had to rely completely on symptomatic information. In this paper, a new method of postcensal estimation is presented in which the symptomatic information is combined with sample data by means of a regression format.
