  • The life and death of cremated infants and children from the Neo-Punic tophet at Zita, Tunisia

    Open Access•Jessica I Cerezo-Román, B Kaufman et al.•ARTICLE•Antiquity•2024

Tophets are Phoenician and Punic sanctuaries where cremated infants and children were buried. Many studies focus on the potentially sacrificial nature of these sites, but this article takes a different approach. Combining osteological analysis with a consideration of the archaeological and wider cultural context, the authors explore the short life-courses and mortuary treatments of 12 individuals in the tophet at the Neo-Punic site of Zita, Tunis…

  • Quantifying Surplus and Sustainability in the Archaeological Record at the Carthaginian-Roman Urban Mound of Zita, Tripolitania

    B Kaufman, Hans Barnard et al.•ARTICLE•Current Anthropology•2021•Citada por: 2•Referencias: 43

Cultural ecological theory is applied to a spatially and temporally bounded archaeological data set to document long-term paleoeco-logical processes and associated sociopolitical behaviors. Volumetric excavations, treating the material culture of an archaeological matrix similar to an ecological core, can yield quantifiable frequencies of surplus goods that provide a multiproxy empirical lens into incremental changes in land use practices, natura…

  • New insights into the urban history of Meninx (Jerba)

    Open Access•Stefan Ritter, Sami Ben Tahar•ARTICLE•Antiquités africaines•2020

The archaeological investigations at the site of ancient Meninx (Jerba) in 2017 and 2018 revealed further details of the urban layout of this important seaport. The work also provided new insights into all periods of the city’s history, from the 4th c. B.C. to the late 7th c. A.D. It also answered the question of where the harbor facilities of Meninx were situated

  • Wool sheep and purple snails-Long-term continuity of animal exploitation in ancient Meninx (Jerba/Tunisia)

Open Access•Simon Trixl, Sami Ben Tahar et al.•ARTICLE•International Journal of…•2020•Citada por: 1•Referencias: 7

Archaeological research at the ancient city of Meninx in Jerba, Tunisia, carried out by the Institut National du Patrimoine Tunisie and Ludwig Maximilian University of Munich (LMU) produced more than 10,000 faunal specimens and shed light on subsistence activities spanning from the fourth century BCE until the seventh century CE. Despite its highly diverse fauna totalling at least 69 species of mammals, birds, reptiles, fish and molluscs, domesti…

    Open Access•Sami Ben Tahar•ARTICLE•Antiquités africaines•2019

  • Zooarchaeological evidence for meat consumption at Zita, Tunisia, during the Punic to Roman occupations (2nd century BCE to 3rd century CE)

    Open Access•Victoria Moses, B Kaufman et al.•ARTICLE•International Journal of…•2019•Citada por: 3•Referencias: 14

Although Roman North Africa is known for its production of cereals, faunal evidence from the Neo-Punic urban mound of Zita in South East Tunisia shows that meat was an important part of the diet. Similarly to other North African sites, sheep and goat contributed the most to meat consumption in all time periods. The proportions of cattle, sheep/goat, and pig (the most common sources of meat in most Roman influenced sites) are closer to the nearby …

  • L’atelier céramique d’Henchir Chouggaf (Ouedhref, Tunisie)

    Open Access•Sami Ben Tahar, Claudio Capelli•ARTICLE•Antiquités africaines•2018

This was the first step in a Tunisian-German project (a cooperation between the Institut National du Patrimoine, Tunis, and the Institut für Klassische Archäologie der Ludwig-Maximilans-Universität München), the aim of which is to shed light on the urban history of the most important city on the island of Jerba in antiquity. Meninx, sit…

  • Henchir Tawrirt (Jerba)

    Open Access•Sami Ben Tahar•ARTICLE•Antiquités africaines•2016

    Open Access•Sami Ben Tahar•ARTICLE•Antiquités africaines•2010
