Gesundheitspolitik in der Nachkriegszeit. Grossbritannien und die Bundesrepublik Deutschland im Vergleich

Be warned! That issue is not addressed in this book. The title may refer to the postwar era, but the book begins for Britain in 1948, with the N…

It is a companion piece to a comparative study of vaccination policy published in 1998, and is intended to be complemented by a study of the impact of bacteriology on public health. It is f…
Vaccination Policy Against Smallpox, 1835-1914
There are three identifiable phases in comparing vaccination policy in England, Prussia and Imperial Germany. (1) Prior to the 1870's the tradition of medical police in Prussia resulted in the vaccination of the population being treated as a State responsibility earlier than in England and provided an appropriate administrative framework. The administrative pressure that could be exerted persuaded the Prussian authorities that legislation to make…

British Social Reform and German Precedents
This is a study of one of the central themes of pre-1914 British history - the move towards social reform and the accompanying growth of collectivism and bureaucracy. It focuses on the conditions under which Britain was willing to borrow political devices from imperial Germany and the problems inherent in borrowing from a different political culture. Compulsory social insurance had been pioneered by Germany in the 1880s to deal with the consequen…

Poverty and social theory in England
IV. Finance and Politics in Urban Local Government in England, 1835–1900
One of the chief features of the history of nineteenth-century England was undoubtedly the increase in the size of cities, and in the proportion of the total population who lived under urban conditions. Since this process turned out to be a long-term trend, the urban communities, especially the larger ones, were always historically more important than the statistics of urban to rural population in any one decade would have suggested.2 They were t…
