  • North American Caballines and Amerhippines of the Past 1 Million Years (Part 1)

    Open Access•Véra Eisenmann, Christina I Barrón-Ortiz et al.•ARTICLE•Quaternary•2025

Horses were widely distributed in North America during the Pleistocene epoch and their fossil remains are common in sedimentary deposits of this age. Despite their rich fossil record, the systematics and taxonomy of North American Pleistocene horses remain unresolved. We evaluated a large sample of cranial and postcranial horse fossils of Irvingtonian and Rancholabrean North American Land Mammal Age. In this study, we present Part 1 of our evalua…

  • Predictive use of modern reference osteological collections for disentangling the shape of Eurasian equid cheek teeth and metapodials in archaeological material

    Open Access•Azadeh F Mohaseb, Raphaël Cornette et al.•ARTICLE•International Journal of…•2023•Referencias: 56

Equids have shaped past Eurasian societies in many ways. This applies in particular to domestic horses, donkeys, and their hybrids. Key to documenting modes of exploitation and cultural trajectories in past societies is the correct taxonomic classification of tooth and bone specimens found in archaeological sites. However, close osteomorphological resemblance of wild and domestic equids and their economically valuable hybrids, that is, mules and …

  • Old World Fossil Equus (Perissodactyla, Mammalia), Extant Wild Relatives and Incertae Sedis Forms

    Open Access•Véra Eisenmann•ARTICLE•Quaternary•2022•Citada por: 3•Referencias: 20

Discussion of the phylogenetic relations between Plesippus, Allohippus, and Equus. Descriptions and illustrations of 30 Equid extant and fossil species younger than 2 Ma. Particular attention is given to slender forms with short protocones usually referred to ‘Equus altidens’ from Süssenborn and Untermassfeld (Germany), Akhalkalaki and Dmanisi (Georgia), Pirro (Italy), Venta Micena (Spain) and Aïn Hanech (Algeria). Occurrence of Asinine features …

  • Geochronology, paleogeography, and archaeology of the Acheulian locality of ‘Evron Landfill in the western Galilee, Israel

Open Access•Maayan Shemer, Onn Crouvi et al.•ARTICLE•Quaternary Research•2019

A multidisciplinary study was conducted in a newly discovered Paleolithic locality, named ‘Evron Landfill. This locality is a part of the Lower Paleolithic complex of ‘Evron located at the western Galilee, Israel. Examination of artifacts has enabled the cultural attribution of ‘Evron Landfill to the Early Acheulian, while detailed paleomagnetic stratigraphy places the hominin occupations near the Brunhes–Matuyama transition ~0.77 Ma. This age is…

  • The systematic position of Equus hydruntinus, an extinct species of Pleistocene equid☆

Open Access•A Burke, Véra Eisenmann et al.•ARTICLE•Quaternary Research•2003

Palaeolithic people commonly hunted Equus hydruntinus, an extinct species of equid whose cursorial body proportions suggest an adaptation to semi-arid conditions. Despite the frequency with which it is encountered in fossil deposits, only partial cranial remains have been reported until now. As a result, the systematic affiliation of the species remains a subject of controversy. Two nearly complete E. hydruntinus crania are presented here for the…
