Maternal Preconception Diet and the Sex Ratio
Temporal variations in the sex ratio, or the ratio of boys to girls at birth, have been widely studied and variously attributed to social changes, conditions of war, and environmental changes. Recently, Mathews et al. ["You are what your mother eats: Evidence for maternal preconception diet influencing fetal sex in humans," Proc. R. Soc. bond. B 275:1661-1668 (2008)] studied the direct evidence of individual pregnancies and established an associa…

The Roots of Entrepreneurship and Labour Demand
This paper develops a model as a means to explain business formation and the labour demand of entrepreneurs. An individual will become an entrepreneur if the expected rewards surpass the wages of employment, and the expected rewards depend on an assessment of individual ability and on risk attitude. Actual ability determines success and hence the demand for wage labour of the firm. In equilibrium these factors govern the distribution of a given w…

Econometric Applications of Maximum Likelihood Methods
The advent of electronic computing permits the empirical analysis of economic models of far greater subtlety and rigour than before, when many interesting ideas were not followed up because the calculations involved made this impracticable. The estimation and testing of these more intricate models is usually based on the method of Maximum Likelihood, which is a well-established branch of mathematical statistics. Its use in econometrics has led to…

The Volume of Transactions and the Circulation of Money in the United States, 1950–1979
In the identity of exchange I distinguish between currency and bank payments on one side and several types of transactions and the transfer of idle money on the other. An attempt is made to measure these variables, with varying success. On the payments side I argue that currency velocity is constant (and low) and that the vast rise of bank money velocity is largely due to increased short-term investment of idle funds. The results suggest an upwar…
