  • German Culture in English Lecture Courses

    Harold Von Hofe•ARTICLE•The German Quarterly•1948

SINCE the growing trend of offering, on the undergraduate level, elective English lecture courses dealing with phases of German civilization has run parallel to soaring enrollment in German language courses, we can construe this development as a sign of expansion and initiative. It is not as though we are delaying a retreat forced upon us by dwindling registration. Freshmen and sophomores fill many sections of lower division courses, a generous s…

  • German Literature in Exile

    Harold Von Hofe•ARTICLE•The German Quarterly•1947

Exile, Thomas Mann and Heinrich Mann, Bruno Frank and Franz Werfel, have three characteristics in common. They are members of the well-to-do middle class, they are intellectuals producing essayistic writing as well as fiction, and their works are infused with the traditions of humanism.1 Leonhard Frank, on the other hand, shares none of these characteristics. He sprang from a poor family in Wiirzburg, he is neither an essayist nor does he possess…

ON THE 10th of February, 1933, Thomas Mann delivered his last lecture on German soil, reading the Leiden und Gr8i3e Richard Wagners in the Auditorium maximum of the University of Munich. As early as 1911 he had written: Was ich Richard Wagner an Kunstgliick und Kunsterkenntnis verdanke, kann ich nie vergessen und sollte ich mich noch so weit im Geiste von ihm entfernen.' Wagner's influence is reflected conspicuously in his early works. Moreover T…

  • German Literature in Exile

    Harold Von Hofe•ARTICLE•The German Quarterly•1944

THE HISTORY of Europe is replete with instances in which public figures, particularly writers, were forced to flee from their native countries. Diverse reasons were responsible for compulsory migrations in which Frenchmen have fled to Germany, Italians to France, Germans to England, Russians to Switzerland, all of them to America, and so on ad infinitum. The story of such peregrinations strikes a peculiarly tragic note for the writer, who, above …

  • German Literature in Exile

    Harold Von Hofe•ARTICLE•The German Quarterly•1944

ON FEBRUARY 19, 1933, a sumptuous party attended by leading officials of the Republic and by representatives of foreign powers was given in Berlin. Germany stood on the brink. Some thought that complete surrender to National Socialism could be averted while others felt it to be inevitable. One of the guests, Heinrich Mann, was uncertain and had been unable to come to resolute decisions that would have far-reaching effects in shaping his life. In …
