  • Profit shifting from Nigeria to Europe

Open Access•Rachel Etter‐Phoya, Stuart Murray et al.•ARTICLE•PLOS Global Public Health•2025

The United Nations Universal Declaration of Human Rights states that everyone is entitled to economic and social rights essential to survive and thrive (Articles 25 and 26) and everyone is entitled to a social and international order in which their rights and freedom can be realised (Article 28). These rights must be ensured through national efforts and international cooperation (Article 22), but many millions of people worldwide do not access th…

  • Our poison'd chalice to our own lips

    Stephen G Hall•ARTICLE•Textual Practice•2025

Paying close attention to Shakespeare’s adaptation of his sources, this article traces the relationship between poisoning, tyranny and infanticide in Macbeth, contending that the play’s chilling violence – both metaphorical and literal – towards children is rooted in Macbeth’s desire to be invulnerable. In fact, the tragedy itself offers a meditation on what it means to be vulnerable, implying that our shared physical frailty, along with our basi…

  • Impact of higher-income countries on child health in lower-income countries from a climate change perspective. A case study of the UK and Malawi

Open Access•Eilish Hannah, Rachel Etter‐Phoya et al.•ARTICLE•PLOS Global Public Health•2024

Climate change is the number one threat to child health according to the World Health Organisation. It increases existing inequalities, and lower-income countries are disproportionately affected. This is unjust. Higher-income countries have contributed and continue to contribute more to climate change than lower-income countries. This has been recognised by the United Nations Committee on the Rights of the Child, which has ruled that states can b…

  • Tax expenditures and progress to the Sustainable Development Goals

    Open Access•Michael Masiya, Stephen G Hall et al.•ARTICLE•Sustainable Development•2024•Citada por: 1•Referencias: 1

This study reports the impact of governments having additional revenue equivalent to tax expenditures on achieving the Sustainable Development Goals in 97 countries. The study draws data on revenue foregone from the Global Tax Expenditure Database. To analyze the potential of an increase in government revenue equivalent to the revenue foregone, the study uses the Government Revenue and Development Estimations modeling. The study finds that if gov…

  • A model of the impact of government revenue and quality of governance on schooling

    Open Access•Stephen G Hall, Bernadette O’hare•ARTICLE•International Journal of…•2024•Referencias: 6

When governments have more revenue, they spend more on human capital, and spending is more effective in well-governed countries. Here, we use an equilibrium correction model to empirically investigate the relationship between government revenue per capita, six indicators of quality of governance, and school attendance, using an unbalanced panel dataset that includes nearly all countries. The results suggest a strong effect over time: as governmen…

  • How can corporate taxes contribute to sub-Saharan Africa’s Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs)? A case study of Vodafone

    Open Access•Eilish Hannah, Bernadette O’hare et al.•ARTICLE•Globalization and Health•2023

BACKGROUND: The COVID-19 pandemic and the climate emergency threaten progress in reaching many of the Sustainable Development Goal (SDG) targets by 2030. The under-5 mortality and maternal mortality rates are well below the targets, and if we progress at the current pace, there is a high risk of not meeting the 2030 goals. Furthermore, the initial progress in the decline in child and maternal mortality since 1990 is likely to be eroded. Much of t…

  • Financing child rights in Malawi

    Open Access•Rachel Etter‐Phoya, Rachel Etter-Phoya et al.•ARTICLE•BMC Public Health•2023

More children would access their economic and social rights if actions were taken to close the gap in global governance regarding taxation. We discuss the responsibility of duty bearers, the need for a global body to arbitrate and monitor international tax matters, and how the Government of Malawi could take further domestic action to mitigate the gaps in global governance and protect itself against illicit financial flows, including tax abuse

  • Tax abuse—The potential for the Sustainable Development Goals

Open Access•Bernadette O’hare, Marisol López et al.•ARTICLE•PLOS Global Public Health•2022

Governments generally provide the services that allow people to access the critical determinants of health: water, sanitation, and education. These are also Sustainable Development Goals and fundamental economic and social human rights. Studies show that governments spend more on public services and health determinants with more revenue. However, governments in low and lower-middle-income countries have small budgets, and tax abuse (avoidance and…

It then goes on to investigate the effect of changing the order of the vector autoregressive system on both the estimates of the cointegrating vector and on the test procedures given by the maximum likelihood approach.
