The effects of high school personal financial education policies on financial behavior
The Effect of Large Monetary Incentives on Survey Completion
This study examines the effect of prepaid and large postpaid monetary incentives using data from an experimental version of the Survey of Consumer Finances. The survey was fielded in person to a random sample of adults in high-income areas of the United States. Monetary incentives were randomly assigned: $5 prepaid incentive and notification postcard, or no prepaid incentive and no postcard. In addition, promised incentives were much greater in v…

We examined the association between influenza outbreaks in 83 metropolitan areas and credit card and mortgage defaults, as measured in quarterly zip code–level credit data over the period of 2004 to 2012. The Effects of Foreclosure Counseling for Distressed Homeowners
In the face of the housing market downturn of the late 2000s, policymakers promoted third‐party mortgage default counseling as a way to help people at risk of losing their homes to avoid foreclosure. Using a unique data set of monthly loan payments remitted to investors combined with administrative data from a national counseling agency, this study estimates the effects of default counseling on the probability that troubled mortgage borrowers wil…
