The coevolution of beliefs and networks
Well‐being and Affluence in the Presence of a Veblen Good
The happiness literature has established that, in the developed countries, increasing affluence has not increased well-being in recent decades. We seek an explanation for this in terms of conspicuous consumption, a phenomenon originally identified by Veblen. We develop some simple general equilibrium models that incorporate a Veblen good, among others. In all of our models, as productivity increases, the Veblen good eventually dominates the econo…
Differential Grading Standards and Student Incentives
We present data on grades from three Canadian universities. These data suggest that grading standards differ significantly across disciplines within universities. To the extent that grading standards are not uniform across disciplines, the grade point averages (GPAs) of students with different course mixes cannot be meaningfully compared, and therefore their GPAs cannot legitimately be used to assess their relative achievement. Yet GPAs are used …

Micromotives and Macrobehavior

Wage Dispersion, Job Vacancies and Job Search in Equilibrium
In his survey, Models of Market Organization with Imperfect Information, Michael Rothschild paraphrases a colleague's views on the importance of imperfect information. friction caused by disequilibrium and lack of information accounts for variations in the numbers we observe at the fifth or sixth decimal place. Your stories are interesting but have no conceivable bearing on any question of practical economic interest (Rothschild, 1973, p. 1283). …

Unemployment, Underemployment, and Optimal Job Search
A three-sector general equilibrium model is employed to analyze the consequences of changes in aggregate demand, union power, workers' time horizons, and labor force size on "unionized" industries, industries with competitive labor markets, and unemployment. Workers are "voluntarily" unemployed while searching for jobs, attempting to arbitrage a wage gap created by partial "unionization." Many reduced-form elasticities are ambiguous in algebraic si…
