Participatory Action Research as a Pedagogical Framework for Refuge Engagement in Higher Education
This essay explores the use of participatory action research (PAR) as a pedagogical framework for transformative inquiry and ethical engagement with refugees in higher education. The pedagogical practice of learning from refugee testimonies has been criticized for reinforcing power imbalances and potentially causing harm to participants (e.g., Taylor et al., 2014; Gabriel, 2008; Kahn & Fabos, 2017). We reflect on the practice of autoethnographic …

It Was Supposed to Be an Internship”
This article documents the historical and semiotic factors that have entailed a normative ambiguity of “the internship,” both as an ideological sign and as a participant role that has increasingly mediated the relationships between higher education and careers in the United States. We present comparative life history narratives of two interns drawn from a longitudinal interview study, which illustrate the negotiations, experiences, and consequenc…

The Time Politics of Refugee Resettlement and Higher Education in the United States
This paper sheds light on experiences within systems of US resettlement and its structures of (un)welcome. There is considerable evidence that the policy framework of these systems complicates the possibilities of higher education for refugees. Drawing on interviews with residents with a refugee background and resettlement service providers, we explore how US refugee resettlement policy creates obstacles for refugees in pursuing higher education …

Piling on the stress
The United States is experiencing state disinvestment from higher education and significant wealth inequality. This article documents how low-income college students both experience and attempt to manage these contexts in their daily lives at a public flagship university in the American Midwest. We theorize these experiences as forms of precarity entailed by a culture and institutional form that we describe as the neoliberal majoritarian universi…
‘One internship, two internships, three internships … more!’
Internships are increasingly promoted as a high impact practice to improve students’ post-graduation employment outcomes, and educators often encourage students to participate in multiple internships. Yet, there is a lack of research on the sociocultural contexts associated with multiple internship participation. We present findings about the culture of multiple internship participation – drawing on focus groups and one-year follow-up interviews …
Autoethnographic engagement in participatory action research
This article documents and analyzes autoethnographic engagement in participatory action research (PAR)—a reflective, irritative, and dialogic writing and team-discussion process which documents researcher-activist experiences and contextualizes them within the action research process. We document autoethnography as implemented in a research partnership between HMoob American college student activists and education researchers, to study the system…
Closing the Doors of Opportunity
Background: Internships for college students can enhance their grades, skills, and employment prospects, but finding and completing an internship sometimes requires considerable resources. Consequently, before postsecondary institutions consider mandating this high-impact practice, more evidence is needed regarding the various obstacles students face as they seek an internship. Focus of Study: The purpose of this study was to document the prevale…
On the Intersectional Amplification of Barriers to College Internships
In this article, authors Matthew Wolfgram, Brian Vivona, and Tamanna Akram present a comparative case study analysis of five students from a comprehensive, urban Hispanic-Serving Institution whose experiences exemplify a coordination of intersectional factors that amplify barriers to internship participation. Research shows that college internships yield academic, economic, and professional benefits. However, the opportunity to locate and partici…

Science Talk and Scientific Reference
This review of research literature on the language practices associated with the production and circulation of scientific knowledge documents four discourse-ideological processes: data/theory enregisterment, objectification, visualization, and entextualization. I argue that these processes cause the stabilization of scientific reference by imposing a conventionalist language ideology that opposes language and the objective reality of the world th…
Gesture and the Communication of Mathematical Ontologies in Classrooms
This article is an analysis of a high school geometry teacher's gesture and embodied social action in the context of classroom instruction, and its role in the communication of an implicit theory of the ontological status of mathematical knowledge. In particular, I argue that the teacher's bodily performance in the classroom setting communicates the Platonic position of abstract-realism-that mathematical entities are ontologically real abstractio…
Students learn more when their teacher has learned to gesture effectively
Teachers’ gestures are an integral part of their instructional communication. In this study, we provided a teacher with a tutorial about ways to use gesture in connecting ideas in mathematics instruction, and we asked the teacher to teach sample lessons about slope and intercept before and after this tutorial. In response to the tutorial, the teacher enhanced his communication about links between ideas by increasing the frequency with which he ex…
The Entextualization of Ayurveda as Intellectual Property
This article documents the practices of pharmaceutical creativity in Ayurveda, focusing in particular on how practitioners appropriate multiple sources to innovate medical knowledge. Drawing on research in linguistic anthropology on the social circulation of discourse-a process calledentextualization-I describe how the ways in which Ayurveda practitioners innovate medical knowledge confounds the dichotomous logic of intellectual property (IP) rig…
Truth Claims and Disputes in Ayurveda Medical Science
This article investigates how scientific truth claims are articulated and disputed by a community of practitioners of a South Asian system of medicine called Ayurveda. I first describe the epistemological criteria of authoritative knowledge in Ayurveda, which I theorize as a disciplinary ideology of truth. Next, I show how the protagonists at a scientific conference designed their truth claims to reference and index this ideological framework for…
