Exploring Discomfort and Care in the Experience of a National Academic Staff Development Programme
This paper explores the use of the pedagogy of discomfort and care in the Teaching Advancement at University (TAU) Fellowships programme, an innovative staff development programme in South African higher education. Our analysis of participant experience of the programme through the lenses of the pedagogy of discomfort and care draws on reflective commentaries submitted by the participants. We found that the initial experience of discomfort was wi…
The past in the present
The paper focuses on the preservation of the German language introduced by nineteenth‐century immigrants to colonial Natal, which in certain communities is – surprisingly – still spoken today. One feature of these communities is their fascination with the past. This has resulted in the production of numerous family, parish and school histories, which recreate the five or six generations spent in South Africa. I investigate five of these family hi…
Gender aspects of the use of English on a South African university campus
This paper seeks an explanation for the current tendency of female students at the University of KwaZulu-Natal, Durban, South Africa, to select English rather than their L1, isiZulu, for social interactions with Zulu peers. I draw on Labov's (2001) findings on the prominent role of women in language change, recent work on language shift and changing conceptualizations of gender. I take as given macro factors and instead explore gendered self-perc…
Gender and usage patterns of English in South African urban and rural contexts
Relatively little attention has been paid to gender issues in the investigation of world Englishes, in spite of their common focus, over the past twenty years, on the analysis of (hidden) ways in which power is exercised in society. Recent studies in gender and language have begun to reveal ways in which gender contributes to linguistic pluralism and diversity in post-colonial societies. This paper draws on studies of gender and bilingualism by G…
In with heart and soul
Some rural German-speaking communities in South Africa have maintained their minority languagefor the past 140 years. After a brief presentation of some salient aspects of theories of ethnicity, the paper seeks to analyze one such Community as an ethnic group in terms of language, religion, culture, and values. The constitution ofboundaries within a broader Englishspeaking context, the maintenance and the crossing of such boundaries, and the r ol…
Keeping the kitchen clean

The concept of face and its applicability to the Zulu language
The cross-cultural study of directives
Attitudes towards English in South Africa
The future language dispensation in South Africa has been widely discussed, yet little is known about the attitudes of ordinary second-language speakers towards English, the language all agree will remain dominant for the foreseeable future. This paper attempts to begin to remedy this lack of knowledge by reporting on a series of interviews conducted with Zulu-speakers in Durban. Two groups of respondents, on the one hand 20 students and professi…
Language, power, and emancipation in South Africa
Against the background of the widely divergent perspectives on language and power of the last decade, this paper seeks to develop a more general model of the 'power of language'. A first section considers various explanations of the concept of 'power' as developed in the political sciences. Certain of these insights are then applied to the phrase 'the power of language', and a model is developed, differentiating between, on the one hand, overt pr…
