The Rehabilitation of Bocchoris
It has been suggested that the pharaoh Bocchoris was famous for his wisdom, and that accordingly, the production of items bearing his cartouche is unlikely to have been confined to his short reign (720/19–715/14 BC, corresponding to the Twenty-fourth Dynasty). The latter therefore cannot provide a valid terminus post quem for contexts in the Classical world in which such Bocchoris-related artefacts occur. This suggestion is reviewed, and found wa…

Nestor's Cup and the Etruscans
Bronze cheese‐graters have been found in three 9th‐century warriors' graves at Lefkandi in Euboea. The presence of a similar item in a socially elevated male (and military) context is attested in the Iliad (xi, 628–643), when it is used in the preparation of a kykeon (mixture) in Nestor's depas (cup) that apparently revives a wounded hero. ‘Nestor's cup, good to drink from’ is mentioned in an inscription from a grave ( c. 725–700) at Euboean Pith…

The Etruscans
As far as the literary sources for Etruscan history are concerned, it must be realized that Greek and Roman historical writers were concerned exclusively with the Greek and Roman views of the episodes. These episodes brought Etruria into contact with the Greek states and with the growing power of Rome. The geographical distribution of the Villanovan culture covers southern Etruria and Tuscany south of the Apennines, central Emilia and the eastern…

Provenance and Firing Techniques of Geometric Pottery from Veii
Samples of seventeen painted Geometric vases from Veii in southern Etruria were subjected to Mössbauer analysis, a technique that has recently achieved the notoriously elusive distinction between LG made at and imported to Pithekoussai. The two main groups (A, B) and three subgroups (B-i, B-ii, B-iii) established analytically at Veii are compared with the identifications proposed on stylistic grounds for the same pieces by J.-P. Descœudres and R.…

Pendent Semicircles at Veii
The persistent absence of pendent concentric semicircles in the West is commonly regarded as surprising. MG skyphoi with this motif are among the earliest Greek types at Al Mina, and Boardman has suggested that ‘Euboean workshops may have stopped making them by the time Pithekoussai was founded’, though he later qualified this: ‘I think all it demonstrates is how very little we still know about early colonisation or precolonial days in Italy.’ Th…
George Dennis and the Etruscans
It is well enough known that readers of English enjoy unimpeded access to 'the greatest book written about the Etruscans' in George Dennis'sCities and cemeteries of Etruria(Strong, 1968, 140). Well enough known: but not entirely true. Dennis's references to the Etruscans themselves have rather less evocative charm and lasting value than his guide to their country: 'he (and his contemporaries) got thehistoryhopelessly wrong' (Finley, 1972, III; an…
