Identity positions of the resisting student in the academic student resistance discourse
How does the academic discourse of resistance in university classrooms write the identities of resisting students into shape? We answer this question by performing a review of the student resistance literature. Analyzing this literature, we apply methods of critical discourse analysis and identify six identity positions of the resisting student as construed by the academic discourse. Discussing how these different identity positions frame the way…
Introduction to the Special Issue
This Special Issue emerged as a reaction to changes in the organisation of academic work that authors variously refer to as the managerial university (e.g., Laiho et al. 2022; Lea 2011), the McUniversity (e.g., Nadolny and Ryan 2015; Parker and Jary 1995), the neoliberal university (e.g., Davies et al. 2006), the corporate university (e.g., Angus 2007) or the entrepreneurial university (e.g., Marginson and Considine 2000; Slaughter and Leslie 199…
The Will to Border
This article provides a deeper understanding of how territorial borders matter for identifications. In an ethnographical investigation, which identifies four othering practices, we illustrate how cross-border commuters construct and negotiate identity by establishing, reinforcing, changing, and/or abolishing self-other distinctions. In these practices, territorial borders become subject to mundane borderwork in everyday negotiation, erasing and b…
Trapped in limbo – Academics' identity negotiation in conditions of perpetual liminality
Purpose This paper aims to investigate the experiences of permanent liminality of academics and the associated multidimensional processes of identity negotiation. Design/methodology/approach The article draws upon a three-and-a-half-year at-home ethnography. The first author – as insider, participant and researcher – investigated the consequences of an organizational redesign that pushed members of a local university department into a situation o…
Doing Autoethnography
In this article, I address six particular challenges that autoethnographers may face during their journey to understand how culture flows through the self while the self flows through culture. I ask how autoethnographers zoom into personal lives while staying focused on the study of culture, whether they should prefer hard data or soft impressions, to what extent autoethnography can be done collaboratively, whether evocative autoethnography is be…

Purpose – Telling the story of the author’s attempts acquiring the Danish language over the past three and a half years, the purpose of this paper is to investigate how identity work is narratively accomplished within organisational contexts. It aims at developing an in-depth understanding of the process of identity work. Design/methodology/approach – The autoethnographic study illuminates narratives of subjectivity that inform notions of identit…
Moments of identity formation and reformation
PurposeThe purpose of the article is to illuminate micro-processes and dynamics of identity work in an academic working context. It elaborates on the various and shifting self-notions experienced within a typical workday of an academic.Design/methodology/approachThe study adopts an analytic autoethnographic approach focusing on recalled experiences of the author's current employment in a university department. This approach is considered to contr…
Non-standard employment and leadership research
The article argues that non-standard employees (NSEs) perceive the employee–employer relationship and hence the leader–follower relationship differently, when compared to workers in standard employment contracts. It highlights relevant differences between employees in flexible employment contracts and standard employees. It seeks to demonstrate that the emerging NSE-follower has consequences for leadership research. Perhaps the most important ram…
Network Governance Between Individual and Collective Goals
The article presents the results of an explorative study in six interfirm networks. Based on the assumption that the absence of clear objectives is considered as a specific aspect of leadership in networks, the aim of this paper is to identify central types of goal conflicts and how participants deal with such conflicts in interfirm collaboration. Different formal and informal mechanisms of network governance will be illustrated to address differ…
