  • Secret Cables of the Comintern, 1933–1943

William Chase•ARTICLE•Journal of Cold War Studies•2021

This is a volume for specialists—those who focus on the Communist International (Comintern) and those who study specific Communist parties. The book deals with the encrypted correspondence between Comintern headquarters and various fraternal parties. The cables define the structure and thematic organization of the book. Although the authors provide some introductory context for the cables, a deeper appreciation of the historical context will resu…

  • Enemies Within the Gates?

William Chase, William J Chase et al.•BOOK•Enemies Within the Gates?•2017

This compelling work of documentary history tells a story of idealism betrayed, a story of how the Comintern (Communist International), an organization established by Lenin in 1919 to direct and assist revolutionary movements throughout the world, participated in and was ultimately destroyed by the Stalinist repression in the late 1930s. Presenting and drawing on recently declassified archival documents, William J. Chase analyzes the Comintern’s …

  • Lisa A. Kirschenbaum. International Communism and the Spanish Civil War

    William Chase•ARTICLE•The American Historical Review•2017

With the opening of Soviet-era and Spanish Civil War archives, quite a few studies of Soviet-Spanish relations in the 1930s have recently appeared. Many focus on politically contentious issues, such as the extent and intention of Soviet influence. Lisa A. Kirschenbaum’s International Communism and the Spanish Civil War: Solidarity and Suspicion is a refreshing contribution to this growing body of scholarly literature. It focuses on the “everyday …

  • Scapegoating One's Comrades in the USSR, 1934-1937

    William Chase•ARTICLE•Russian History•2011

This article examines two cases of scapegoating—that of Ludwig Magyar in December 1934, and that of Gevork Alikhanov in June 1937—and applies theories of group identity and behavior to explore what motivated people to scapegoat their comrades, why the groups selected particular people for scapegoating, and what these incidences reveal about the groups that engaged in this ritual. Within political groups, such behaviors are obviously inseparable f…

The memoirs of this remarkable woman--the 78-year-old widow of revolutionist and chief theoretician Bukharin--offer a new dimension to our understanding of Soviet history and one of its darker periods. No other widow of the men who shook the world survived to publish uncensored memoirs. Photographs

    William Chase•ARTICLE•The Russian Review•1987•Citada por: 2

Having read and re-read the lively exchange among Sheila Fitzpatrick, Stephen Cohen, Geoff Eley, Peter Kenez, and Alfred Meyer in the winter 1986 issue, I must confess to being disappointed. I write as an indicted coconspirator, and a very surprised one at that. According to Kenez, I am one of the self-consciously revisionist group of historians of the Stalin era. Yet save for one article co-authored with Arch Getty in 1978,1 my published work to…
