Although archaeology during the past decade has increasingly focussed on the effects of climate change on prehistoric populations, there are few studies, if any, that have offered a high enough resolution in time and space to actually allow discussion of its societal effects. The main purpose of the 'Crisis, Conflict and Climate' programme is to provide this, by investigating a period of climate change, conflict and crisis in Scandinavia, 300-700 …

  • Heritage value from below A local community perspective on conservation, preservation and authenticity in SE Sweden

    Open Access•Ludvig Papmehl-Dufay•ARTICLE•Cadernos do LEPAARQ (UFPEL•2020

This paper discusses how archaeological heritage can function as a focus of community identity in a rural setting, and what happens when an original monument is replaced by a copy. The case study presented deals with a visually striking ancient monument on the island of Öland, SE Sweden, that was accidentally broken in 2014 and later reconstructed. This case thus touches upon concepts such as authenticity, age value and aura of ancient objects an…

  • Creating Ambassadors Through Digital Media

    Open Access•Ludvig Papmehl-Dufay, Ulrika Söderström•ARTICLE•Internet Archaeology•2017•Referencias: 6

In 2010, five caches of top quality Migration-period jewellery were found at the Iron Age ring fort of Sandby borg, on the island of Öland, Sweden. When subsequent archaeological investigations revealed evidence of a violent massacre in the late 5th century, which left the victims lying on the spot where they had fallen, media and public interest increased rapidly. Since the local community raised concerns about the fast-growing interest in the p…

    Gunilla Eriksson, Ludvig Papmehl-Dufay et al.•ARTICLE•World Archaeology•2013•Citada por: 3•Referencias: 27

Drawing on data from the megalithic tomb in Resmo on Öland in the Baltic Sea, we use a multi-isotopic approach, involving the systematic treatment and modelling of extensive human and faunal isotopic data (14C, δ13C, δ15N, δ34S and 87Sr/86Sr), along with archaeological contextual evidence, to study change and interaction. The fact that people utilize aquatic resources necessitates modelling of the sulphur and strontium isotope data, to prevent th…

  • Koridoriniai kapai Mysinge’s vietovėje

    Open Access•Ludvig Papmehl-Dufay•ARTICLE•Archaeologia Lituana•2011

During the latest part of the early Neolithic period around 3500–3300 BC, megalithic tombs in the form of dolmens and passage graves are built in many different parts of Scandinavia. In Denmark thousands of dolmens and hundreds of passage graves are known, and in northern Germany huge number of tombs are documented as well (Midgley, 1992:418ff). On a Swedish level, dense concentrations of tombs are found along the coasts in Scania and western Swe…
