Established thirty-two years ago, the Roper Public Opinion Research Center (now The Roper Center, Inc.) is today the oldest and largest archive of sample survey data in the world. The raw data and supporting documentation from thousands of individual studies carried out in more than 70 countries have been deposited in the Center through the cooperative efforts of the world's major survey research organizations. Between two and three thousand social scientists annually avail themselves of this rich data resource by requesting various services of the Center, such as data set duplication, information retrieval, or specific data analysis runs on the computer. More than 40 colleges, universities, and research organizations are members of the International Survey Library Association (ISLA), the cooperative membership arm of the Roper Center. The Roper Center was originally located at Williams College, where it began acquiring and storing data for local use in 1946. It was formally reconstituted as a general purpose, service-oriented archive of survey data in 1957. In the ensuing period of two decades, the collection has grown by thousands of individual surveys representing data from countries around the world. In recent years, more than 100 domestic and international survey organizations have regularly contributed their data to the public domain through the Roper Center, and annually 400 to 500 new surveys are put through its standardized accession procedures
