The varied forms and targets of rural insurrection are the subjects of an extensive literature. The diverse modes of peasant mobilization at the beginning of the French Revolution provide a setting for the examination of hypotheses concerning the social conditions that generate specific types of social conflict. A logistic regression analysis reveals the varying contexts in which rural mobilization took on its many forms; but economic integration into the market appears to have contributed to all forms of conflict
