In the April 1986 issue of the Journal of Contemporary History, in an essay on the dominant trends in Italian historiography dealing with fascism, Emilio Gentile defined the 'territory of fascist organizations and myths' as 'still largely unexplored'. In his opinion, such lack of in-depth study was almost inadmissible, since it concerned 'the first mass movement of revolutionary nationalism to seize power in a liberal democracy, the first to function as an armed party ... the first political movement of this century which brought mythical thought to power'.' Seven years after that verdict and largely thanks to studies carried out by Gentile knowledge of 'fascist organizations and myths' has widened and increased. In this connection, it would be correct to speak of an internal adjustment within historiographic research, if one did not see signs of a much wider and more radical change in mental attitudes also within the field of academic studies on the contemporary age. Even without abandoning its moderate tones and traditional wariness, historiographic research has also reflected the cultural upheaval of the end of the 1980s, which culminated in the disaster of so-called 'real socialism', and in the contemporary rejection of the apparatus of interpretation derived from the Marxist tradition
