In THE ART OF SOCIAL CONSCIENCE, Paul Von Blum discusses and illustrates the work of artists who share this attitude of engagement, from Goya’s eloquent protest against the horrors of war and Daumier’s passionate satire on the conditions of humankind to Rouault’s moral outrage based on religious convictions and Munch’s expressions of anguish and despair.
