Conversational Pressure: Normativity in Speech Exchanges is a fantastic book and the first full account of the diverse normative landscape generated by conversation. The book is extremely rich, synthesizing a comprehensive and sophisticated normative framework and developing novel accounts of several interrelated conversational phenomena, including the normativity of address, the normativity of silence, epistemic duties generated by friendship, testimonial entitlement and duties to believe, and the epistemic downfalls of politeness. In what follows, I will focus my discussion on what, to my mind, is the central normative account in the book, i.e., Goldberg's view of the conversational pressure generated by address. According to Goldberg, when a speaker calls for another's attention via address, she puts the addressee(s) under (defeasible) normative pressure to attend to her; targets of address who resist this normative pressure wrong the speaker.
