T HE Editors of the Philosophical Review, in January, i965, published some excerpts from the manuscripts of Friedrich Waismann1 under the title, Notes on Talks with Wittgenstein, dated 30 December, 1929. These were printed with the German text and an English translation by Max Black (pp. 12-13) as a sequel to the English text of Wittgenstein's Lecture on Ethics of ca. September 1929-December 1930 (pp. 3-12). For reasons never explained, Waismann's title for the section and the opening sentence of Wittgenstein's discussion have been deleted from the original and omitted from the translation.2 The missing section title is Zu HEIDEGGER (ON HEIDEGGER). The eliminated first sentence announces Wittgenstein's discussion as one stirred by a basic thought of Heidegger, one which, moreover, he claims to have comprehended well. The deleted sentence runs: Ich kann mir wohl denken was Heidegger mit Sein und Angst meint (I can readily understand what Heidegger means by Being and dread).3
