The Egocentric Particular and Token-Reflexive Analyses of Tense

Ta HAS often been argued that there is something subjective about the temporal perspectives ofpast, present, and future; that there is no now in nature except in relation to the tensed utterances of human beings. This supposedly follows from the fact that tensed verbs (as well as other temporal demonstratives), by which we indicate these temporal perspectives, are or token-reflexive words. The main purpose of this paper is to evaluate this argument. To do this it will be necessary, first, to examine carefully the egocentric particular and tokenreflexive analyses of tense and, second, to see just what follows from them in regard to the subjectivity of temporal perspectives
