Abstract: Ilıpınar höyük has been excavated between 1987 and 2002 by the Netherlands Institute for the Near East at Leiden/Holland and its annex at Istanbul in the context of a research programme called “Early farming communities in the eastern Marmara region” including also investigations at Menteşe and Barcın in the nearby plain of Yenişehir. This middle-sized mound is situated in the alluvial plain west of Iznik Lake. Its occupation runs from the Late Neolithic through the Early Middle Ages, but today’s contribution will concentrate on its earliest farming community dated from 6000 to 5400 calBC. In this account an illustration is given of change in economic strategies and the impact it had on this micro-society. Criteria for the assessment of change selected here are: faunal and floral record; architecture and settlement; storage capacity; population growth/village expansion. These criteria are examined in four selected cases considered representative for particular stages of the community’s occupational history. It is proposed in conclusion that improved efficiency in agriculture led to an increase in population and a new village structure
