The past is always a construct meant to mediate between the present and the future. It is not only inherently unstable and subject to constant reconstitutions but also embodies, in its various permutations, a living teleology and concealed objective contradictions. As such, these “pasts” are invaluable documents not solely or even primarily about what was, but about what is and what should be. Thus the flood of memoirs, monographs and conferences being produced on the occasion of the 20th anniversary of 1968 — a veriatable culture industry in itself — tend to reveal more about the late 1980s than to clarify what “really” happened two decades earlier
