The Philosophy of the Enlightenment, written in 1960 and first published in 1968, is prefaced with the author's apologies. We are told it lacks the scholarly research the topic deserves, and that too much space is devoted to the religious dimensions of Enlightenment philosophy. Goldmann even suggests that he would not have undertaken the project in the first place had it not been commissioned by a German publisher. Indeed, the only justification he offers for the essay is a few hypotehses he claims he would not have ventured in a more substantial work. After such a beginning, the reader might wonder if the book is worth reading at all. And to some extent this concern is justified
