While lack of time is problematic in any single-term offering, it seems especially so in the undergraduate field methods course. Students must usually not only learn techniques of participant observation, unstructured interviewing, etc., but also implement them and prepare an analytic report on the gathered data. Finding the time to complete the data collection phase of the course has proven troublesome to students. Indeed, even under ideal motivational conditions, many experience real difficulties fitting fieldwork into a life situation that include the competing demands of other courses, part-time employment, family, and the like.
