tempts to (a) raise questions in students' minds about the validity of their own thinking about families of the past, and (b) to show the relevance of the past in understanding the present state and future course of thefamily. The exercise consists of a brief survey and discussion ofstudent opinions on characteristics ofthefamily in colonial times, today, and forty years hence. Conducted before formal topical presentation, this exercise is one way of raising questions, thereby enhancing curiosity and interest. The general strategy of this exercise-ask before telling-is applicable to many topics in sociology
