Sociolinguistics and psychopathology

Auditory hallucinations experienced by bilingual individuals and responses to such internal stimuli demonstrate the relationship between social context and individual manifestation of psychopathology. The hallucinations of twelve de‐institutionalised schizophrenics are reported in this paper. Particular attention is directed to the relationships between the manifest content of the hallucination, the language of hallucination, and the sociocultural identifications of the subjects. The role of language and language behaviour in psychopathology is a potentially rich source of data for the sociolinguist and psycholinguist alike, and bilingual individuals offer a unique opportunity to study the role of language and cognition in psychopathology. Increased knowledge of linguistic patterning in such situations will result in improved therapeutic programmes based on a better understanding of the impact of cultural, social and linguistic factors in the precipitation and manifestation of mental illness
