The pattern of educational visits in England

Educational visits are an integral part of school life and an important source of visitors to tourist attractions yet virtually no research exists as to the significance, or pattern of these visits. This paper analyses the structure, nature and issues of educational visits in England. In the mid 1980s there were over 12 million educational visits to attractions annually. There are distinctive spatial variations of visits and their timing peaks in the summer term. Schools vary in their needs from the visit, mainly determined by age of the pupil, and many attractions are now marketing and reorienting their provision to meet these needs. This is particularly important given (i) the introduction of GCSE (General Certificate of Secondary Education) (ii) forecasts of pupil numbers into the 1990s and (iii) the policy of charging for out-of-school activities and hence the need for a worthwhile experience from each visit
