This paper is an amended version of the opening lecture of the Castles, Landscapes and Lordship conference held at York in May 2009 given by Robert Higham and Oliver Creighton (Exeter University). This reviewed the period between the Royal Archaeological Institute's ‘castle origins’ project of the late 1960s and the present day, and set the scene for the other, more site-specific, lectures. In the interest of conciseness, the lecture concentrated on England, with occasional reference to Wales. Although the Scottish, Irish and Welsh dimensions deserve full treatment, the English emphasis is repeated here in order to reflect the lecture. Also in keeping with the lecture is the selective nature of published citation and of castles specifically mentioned: this is neither a full guide to all work in this field nor to all the places where such work has been carried out. The temptation has been resisted to create a new academic article loosely based on the lecture, but some points have been developed beyond what was originally said and some published references have been added. But the essential character of what follows is largely that of the conference contribution. The main difference is that the remarks on landscape and other issues, made by OC, in the second half of the lecture, have been incorporated into the material delivered by RH as presented here
