The construction of increment-decrement life tables
A comment on articles by R. Schoen and V. Nelson

In two papers recently published by Demography, Schoen and Nelson (1974) and Schoen (1975) discuss construction of what they call increment-decrement life tables. Their treatment is quite elementary, but reader is given impression that they are plowing new ground. Indeed, Schoen and Nelson (1974, p. 268) state that to their knowledge, the literature does not contain any thorough and systematic discussion of how to deal with life tables that have entrants as well as exits, particularly when re-entry into a table is permitted. In fact, discussions of kind unknown to Schoen and Nelson appeared in actuarial literature at least as early as 1912 (Du Pasquier, 1912, 1913), in literature on statistical methods in study of public health no later than 1951 (Fix and Neyman, 1951), and in demographic literature at least by 1970 (Hoem, 1970b). Surveys were given in 1972 (Hoem, 1972a, 1972b). In terminology of mathematical statistics, Schoen and Nelson are talking about Markov chains with a finite state space and a continuous time parameter. The literature on Markov chains is extensive. In a. working paper published by Central Bureau of Statistics of Norway in 1968, I gave a more complete discussion of problems investigated in paper by Schoen and Nelson (1974).
