"Toward a Theoretical Conceptualization of "Silence in the Classroom

Professor Martha Gimenez has written an interesting and seminal article exploring several mostly structural factors that contribute to the shrouding of learners into what Freire (1970, 1985) terms a culture of silence. To solve the problem of silence in the classroom, she offers some intriguing recommendations-ranging from the creation of individualized paths for students to attain undergraduate degrees to the reorganization of universities so that students can take lighter course loads and enroll in smaller classes.
