The autobiography of Abdelwhab Elmessiri is a decolonial autobiography that the writer uses to decolonize Arab-Islamic thought by challenging and correcting modernity. His life as a professor, critic, and activist provided him with experiences that allowed him to analyze modernity through concrete examples rather than flaunted theory. Elmessiri falls back on Islamic tradition as well as European humanism and devises a combined critique that seeks to reform modernity to become more responsive to the spiritual not divorced from it. In the process of critiquing modernity, he pays attention to how Western modernity undermines traditions coming as it does from a secularist paradigm that disenchants the world and tries to apply the laws of the physical world to the human phenomenon ignoring the complexity of the human
