The Miles Standish House, Duxbury, Mass., and its British Antecedents

An archaeological excavation at the Miles Standish site in Plymouth colony, Massachusetts, in the 1860s revealed two conjoined buildings which are here interpreted as an example of the unit system. It is compared to a Welsh and an English farmhouse of similar layout and to two other early New England houses which show resemblances of plan. The Miles Standish house illustrates the adaptation of traditional English and Welsh forms to unfamiliar conditions and their rapid abandonment when the possibilities of the new environment began to be exploited
