Tudhoe Hall & Byers Green Hall offer an avenue into understanding the historical changes known for County Durham from the late sixteenth century through to the early eighteenth century. The houses were both rebuilt successively through this period, and were lived in by 'yeoman' and 'gentry' families that occupied social positions more specific than these terms alone imply. An interpretation of these houses in close historical context enables us to comprehend how people lived out social change
